"The Bible clearly requires us to believe that God created the universe out of nothing. (Sometimes the Latin phrase ex nihilo, "out of nothing" is used; it is then said that the Bible teaches creation ex nihilo.) This means that before God began to create the universe, nothing else existed except for God himself." (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology, ¬© 1994 Zondervan, p. 262)

Other passages in the Bible reveal this truth that it was God who created the universe. Psalm 33 tells us that: "By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.... For he spoke, and it came to be: he commanded, and it stood firm." (vv. 6, 9) Some of the additional references are: Psalm 90:2; John 1:3; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 11:3; and Revelation 4:11.
